Some 50 meters East of the Galata Tower is a street that runs parallel to İstiklal Avenue, stretching out for about 300 meters from Galip Dede Avenue along a hillside overlooking the Bosphorus. It was known as Rue Yazıcı (Yazıcı Street) until 1930, and is now named Serdar-ı Ekrem Street. A majestic apartment rises above the street, immediately noticeable by its sheer size. This is Doğan Apartmanı. It dominates its surroundings and has always provided a point of reference in the ocean of buildings crowding the area between Galata and Beyoğlu. It has had several names throughout its history, notably Helbig, Nahid Bey, Botton, and Victoria. Since 1942, it is known as Doğan.
